I'm a lifelong resident of Tonkawa. While I
have always enjoyed gardening and plants, I didn't get started in it
seriously until 1990, when I started working at Northern Oklahoma
College. In 1996 NOC became a botanical garden through the Oklahoma
Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, state wide system. In 1999 I became a
Kay County Master Gardener and in 2004 started a Kay County Junior
Master Gardener group in Tonkawa. We were selected as a pilot group for
a JMG book entitled W.A.T.E.R, Water and the Earth’s Resources. The JMG
Kids adopted Ray See Park, a local park, in 2005. We are responsible for
picking up trash. I do the mowing, weed eating and edging of the park as
a volunteer. We plant the downtown planters and maintain them throughout
the summer. I am also the Superintendant of the Plants and Flowers
Division at the Kay County Free Fair. I did a live radio show for 2
years, several years ago, on KOKB with Craig Ortwein. I have taught
Landscape Architecture, Gardening, Forestry, and Citizenship in the
Community at Boy Scout University when it is held at Northern Oklahoma
College, for the past 6 years. I frequently give gardening programs to
civic groups, Lions Club, Kiwanis, Wheatheart Nutrition, MOPS, etc., in
Kay and Grant Counties. Northern was featured on Oklahoma Gardening in
1997 and in 2007. |
